What Is Fine Jewellery? Solid Gold, Diamonds and What Makes It Different

Fine jewellery is jewellery made from solid precious metal - 14K or 18K gold, platinum, or solid sterling silver - set with natural or genuinely mined gemstones. Unlike demi-fine or fashion jewellery, nothing about fine jewellery is plated: the gold goes all the way through, which is exactly why it costs more, lasts longer, and holds real resale value.

What Is Fine Jewellery?

The industry definition comes down to two tests. First, the metal: fine jewellery is cast from solid gold (usually 14K or 18K) or platinum, not a base metal with a gold layer on top. Second, the stones: fine jewellery is set with natural, mined gemstones - diamonds, sapphires, emeralds - rather than lab-grown alternatives or simulants (lab-grown diamonds are increasingly considered fine jewellery too, provided the metal is solid; it's really the metal that draws the hardest line).

Because both the metal and the stones carry real, appreciating material value, fine jewellery is the only category genuinely suited to being an heirloom - passed down, resized, restored, and still worth something a generation later.

How to Tell Fine Jewellery Apart from Demi-Fine

Check the hallmark. Solid gold is stamped with its purity - 14K, 18K, or the equivalent 585/750 in Europe. Gold vermeil and gold-plated pieces are never stamped this way, because the gold is a coating rather than the whole piece. If a listing doesn't mention solid gold or a karat stamp, assume it isn't fine jewellery. We go into the full metal breakdown in solid gold vs. gold vermeil vs. gold plated.

Fine Jewellery vs. Demi-Fine vs. Fashion Jewellery

If you're deciding which tier actually suits what you're buying it for - an everyday piece, a milestone gift, an investment - we've built a full side-by-side in demi-fine vs. fine vs. fashion jewellery: which should you buy?

Caring for Fine Jewellery

Solid gold won't tarnish, flake, or discolour skin, which is what makes it suitable for daily wear over decades rather than years. It can still scratch or dull with wear, so a soft polishing cloth and an occasional professional clean keep it looking new. Store fine pieces separately from other jewellery to avoid scratching softer metals or stone settings.

Fine Jewellery: Quick Answers

What karat of gold counts as fine jewellery?

10K and above is generally accepted as fine jewellery, though 14K and 18K are the most common in the UK. Anything below 10K, or any gold-plated or gold-filled piece, falls outside the fine jewellery definition regardless of how it's marketed.

Is fine jewellery a good investment?

Solid gold and natural diamonds hold intrinsic material value in a way plated or lab-grown-set demi-fine pieces don't, which is why fine jewellery can be resold, insured, and passed down. That said, buy it because you love the piece first - resale value is a bonus, not a guarantee.

How is fine jewellery different from demi-fine jewellery?

The short answer: solid metal versus plated metal. We cover the full comparison, including which one actually suits your budget and occasion, in demi-fine vs. fine vs. fashion jewellery.

Fine jewellery isn't for every piece in your collection - but for the one or two that need to last a lifetime, it's the only category built for it.
